National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed a five-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute to strengthen technical expertise in tunnel engineering and highway infrastructure development.
The partnership is aimed at bringing advanced international geotechnical capabilities to infrastructure projects located in geologically sensitive and challenging regions across India. Under the agreement, the Norwegian institute will provide consultancy support for tunnel site characterisation, feasibility assessments, detailed project reports, structural evaluations, and safety audits of operational tunnels.
The collaboration will also focus on advanced slope stability analysis, interpretation of InSAR data, and the development of early warning systems to improve infrastructure safety and mitigate risks associated with landslides and other natural hazards.
Officials said the initiative is expected to support the development of safer, stronger, and more resilient highway infrastructure, particularly in areas vulnerable to geological instability.
In addition to technical consultancy, the MoU emphasises institutional capacity building and knowledge sharing through joint research and development initiatives. Workshops, seminars, training programmes, and technical publications are also planned to enhance capabilities in India’s highway and tunnel infrastructure sector over the next five years.
